Skiing
In the midst of the Hohe Tauern national park, Ankogel is one of the most snow-safe mountains in Carinthia – fun in the snow is guaranteed. And Mölltal Glacier is only a few kilometers away. Carinthia’s only glacier skiing paradise! The two ski resorts are connected with a ski bus system.
Apropos reliable snow conditions: According to the central Austrian Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics in Vienna, Mallnitz (Carinthia), Bad Gastein and St. Michael imLungau (Salzburg) were the most snow-sure locations in the winter of 2006/2007.
A) Ankogel mountain railways – skiing at 1,200 – 2,636 m above sea level
The cable car consists of 2 sections: from the Valley Station to 1,287 m and from the climatic spa village Mallnitz to the mountain station located at exactly 2,636 m. In recent years, the capacity was doubled to 6,700 persons / hour. Two T-bar lifts in the upper area of the ski resort provide additional access to the broad hills for carvers. With approximately 30 km of slopes, Ankogel is an ideal family ski resort. It is especially popular for its safe snow, superior slopes and attractive ski terrain.
Numerous hills make for a varied range of slopes and the quality of the runs was awarded the quality certificate from Carinthia in the winter of 2003. No wonder, because the employees of the Ankogel mountain railways have been working there for many years and are thoroughly familiar with every rock and every hill Ankogel has to offer.
Bobo and the ski school for children
The two Köfele lifts near the Valley Station offer an ideal terrain for beginners to practice their first turns. And when Bobo from the ski school makes his surprise appearance, the joy is perfect. The whole group of children will forget to pay attention to the ski instructor while admiring the fat penguin (the ski school mascot and quality characteristic for excellent ski schools) gliding past them on his short skis.
Two boards to enjoy the snow – hooray!
Locals have long discovered what visitors enjoy. Especially the snow covered run into the valley is a secret among Mallnitz residents. The magnificent run first least across free terrain into the wooded area and directly to the parking lot of the Valley Station. Varied and advanced – precisely like the skiers themselves.
Directly at the Valley Station, guests will find the two ski schools. Every winter, their friendly staff is committed to providing first class service and to teaching guests of all ages the art of gliding across the snow on two boards.
Ankogel railways Mallnitz – love that lasts for a lifetime
As classical vacation destination for guests from Austria, Germany, Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary, The Netherlands and Belgium, Mallnitz with the Ankogel railways has become a winter sport tradition that is passed on from parents to children. As a result, the village benefits from a high number of returning guests and is committed to maintaining their favorite activities and to cultivating the flair of a classical winter sport destination. The Mallnitz-Ankogel ski resort is open in the winter time from Christmas until after Easter. We offer attractive family discounts during the whole season and special weekend, carnival and Easter offers. For more information, please visit us any time at www.mallnitz.at and www.ankogel-ski.at.
B) Mölltal Glacier – skiing at 2,300 – 3,100 m above sea level
A well developed ski bus system connects the two sister ski resorts Ankogel and Mölltal Glacier. The only glacier ski resort in Carinthia offers the longest skiing season across the country from the end of September to the beginning of May along with superb slopes and powder snow as far as the eye can see. The state of Carinthia agrees: Mölltal Glacier was awarded the Carinthian Quality Certificate for slopes in the winter of 2002-2003.
With up to 450 cm of natural snow in the middle of winter and a compact under-layer of artificial snow, skiers and snowboarders can enjoy their sport in white from Schareck all the way down to the Schwarzkopf lift. At an altitude of 2,100 to 3,122 m, the Mölltal Glacier offers 50 km of slopes and 9 lift systems.
The ski resort is accessible from the Valley Station at 1,200 m above sea level via Glacier Express (cable car) that reaches the ski school centre at the mid-station on 2,200 m in a “mere” eight minutes. Ice Lake cable car (Eisseebahn, accommodates 6 people) directly reaches the mountain station at 2,800 m above sea level – along with the “Glass Palace”, also known as Ice Lake mountain restaurant. The highest railways are Glacier Jet (covered chair lift for 6) and double chair lift 3000, providing access to the four slopes at Schareck. The Klühspies panorama train brings visitors back from Hochwurtenspeicher to the mountain station from where the family run provides outstanding carving options, making this a perfect area even for beginners to enjoy the winter sport.
The “lowest” point at approximately 2,100 m above sea level is located close to the Schwarzkopf quad chair lift that leads directly to Weisseehaus. It is up to the individual guest whether they would like to go on to the next run directly or whether they prefer to have a bite to eat first. Beginners will find two T-bars and a training lift at mid-station, allowing them to practice their first skiing attempts in a gentle terrain directly adjacent to the ski school.
Ankogel-Mallnitz skiing region
Ankogel, the landmark mountain of Mallnitz, is located amidst the most easterly three thousand meter Alpine peaks. It is one of the skiing areas with guaranteed snow, making sure that guests literally experience “Carinthia’s top skiing adventure”. Super wide, perfectly groomed slopes (35 km) are Ankogel’s trademark as is the generously designed free ride terrain, the longest snow-covered run into the valley in Carinthia as well as the area around the Köfele lift near the valley, specially designed for families and beginners. By the way, separate, cheaper day tickets are available for this area!
Mölltal Glacier skiing area
Mölltal Glacier is the only Glacier and year-round skiing area in Carinthia and is the only skiing area in Carinthia that exceeds the magical 3,000 meter mark. “Carinthia’s top ski fun” at an altitude of up to 3,100 meter above sea level is available here! 53 kilometers of slope, a fun park for snowboarders, countless free ride options and guaranteed snow also attract a number of national ski teams from around.
